Barcelona’s struggles continued as they lost 2-1 at home to Atletico Madrid on Saturday, December 22, 2024, slipping off the top of La Liga. The defeat extended their winless run to three matches, with just five points from a possible 21. Earlier home losses to Leganes and Las Palmas have further hindered their title push, leaving them three points behind Atletico, having played one game more.

Despite suffering their first home loss to Atletico in 18 years, Barcelona coach Hansi Flick was upbeat about his team’s performance and expressed optimism that the upcoming winter break would help them regain their early-season form.

“It was unbelievable how we played today,” Flick said, acknowledging the team’s effort despite the loss. “Maybe this break came at the right time. We have to learn from these things. Losing nine points is not normal, and we need to work on it.”

Flick emphasized that the defeats to Las Palmas and Leganes were behind them and expressed confidence that Barcelona would bounce back after the break. “We are disappointed with the defeat, but life goes on,” he added.

Though his team faced setbacks, Flick remained proud of the young squad and reaffirmed his commitment to restoring their confidence. “When I drive at 6:30 to training, I am happy because I get to work with these players,” he said. “The atmosphere in the dressing room isn’t great right now, but that’s football. We will be back stronger.”

Flick also highlighted the potential of his team, noting, “We have to build confidence and make them proud of how they play. My job is to instill confidence in all the players. In Munich, I had a team full of experienced players, but I’m happy with this squad—it’s young and has fantastic quality.”
